About the LC
LC opened in March 2008 and has fast become Swansea's premier leisure complex.![]()
With a water-park the envy of most holiday destinations and incorporating the world’s first deep water standing wave machine - the Boardrider; the largest health and fitness gym in Wales; the first interactive audio visual play zone structure; 30ft climbing wall; health spa; dance studios; various catering outlets and a large multi-purpose sports hall, it is no wonder that there was much anticipation surrounding the opening of the ‘LC’.
LC was formerly Swansea Leisure Centre. Originally opened by the Queen during her Silver Jubilee year in 1977, Swansea’s Leisure Centre became one of Wales’ top leisure facilities and a prominent tourist attraction. However the building was closed in 2003 amid much controversy and faced the prospect of being demolished.
Thankfully Swansea County Council, after much deliberating, began plans for a full refurbishment. Whilst the external structure of the building remained the same, the project became a complete remodeling internally turning the former site into the vibrant and modern 21st century complex we see today.
The refurbishment began in 2005 with Powell Dobson - one of Wales' leading firms of architects - and nationally renowned contractors Laing O'Rourke leading the project.
The LC finally opened its door in March 2008 and to commemorate the old centre the Queen and the Duke of
Edinburgh came to Swansea once again to open the site. The effort behind the project did not go unnoticed and in early June 2008, LC was pleasantly surprised to discover they were winners of a Swansea Style Award under the category 'Stylish Building'.
After years of hard work, all involved in the project can step back and admire their achievement. The team resurrected a hugely missed family destination and turned it into a modern day facility that Swansea can be proud of. But it wasn't easy...
The design of the pool hall required 2,600 unique three dimensional setting out points.
There are 4 million tiles in the pool hall and the equivalent of 27 badminton courts of structural glass used throughout the building.
It took 5 days to fill the main pool with water and a further 4 weeks to get it up to temperature.
There are theoretically 256 wave combinations available in the main wave pool although only 12 planned.
There is the equivalent of 2 football pitches of painted surface area in the building, cooling for the project is the equivalent of 1200 domestic refrigerators and there are over 140 miles of electrical cabling.![]()
It is estimated that 18,000 bacon sandwiches were consumed in the on site canteen during construction!
LC has already proven to be a valuable facility to the residents and visitors of Swansea. Re-opened after half a decade, it seems LC was well worth the wait.
